1 week in Ireland

From the bustling streets of Dublin to the windy cliffs of the west coast and the Giant’s Causeway in Northern Ireland, the tiny Emerald Isle has years’ worth of adventure. Only have a week? Here’s how to make the most of your time.

  • Dublin. Arrive in Ireland’s largest city and settle in for two or three days. Spend a day exploring the city — touristy Temple Bar, Trinity College and the hundreds of bookstores, shops and pubs that dot the lively city streets.
  • Galway. Take a train west, crossing the rolling Irish countryside to Galway. A vibrant cultural hub, Galway is also the perfect home base to explore the rest of the west coast. Buy a ferry ticket (with bus transfer) to the Aran Islands, and spend the day biking the rocky face of Inis Mor. Craving quiet? Stay a night on the island. Back in the city, spend another day listening to live music in pubs, exploring the outdoor market and visiting the swans in Galway Bay.
  • Belfast. From Galway, buy a train ticket back to Dublin, then head north to Belfast, across the border in Northern Ireland. Spend a day relaxing in the city, then catch a train north to Coleraine, where you can take a bus to both the Giant’s Causeway and Dunluce Castle. Alternatively, spend the day in nearby Bushmills enjoying the famous whiskey of the same name.
  • Return to Dublin, spending one last night in the city before catching a plane home.
